Barbaris (Suvorin household pet)
Barbaris
also: Барбарису, Барбарис
A pet (likely a dog) of the Suvorin household at Feodosia, named in Chekhov's closing regards alongside Anna Ivanovna and Nastyusha -- "Barbaris" (barberry) fits the pattern of plant/fruit-derived pet nicknames; not otherwise attested elsewhere in the corpus under this name. Distinct from any Vinogradov entity and from the other named Suvorin-household pets already in the corpus -- no shared detail links it to any of them.
Reading notes
- To A. S. Suvorin, 29 July 1891. Bogimovo. §10 My regards to Anna Ivanovna, Nastyusha, and Barbaris
The closing regards name two members of the Suvorin household -- Anna Ivanovna Suvorina and her daughter, here in the diminutive "Nastyusha" (cf. the same diminutive at \S17) -- and then, in the same breath, a third name, "Barbaris" (barberry), which does not match any known person in the Suvorin circle. Given the corpus's established pattern of naming Suvorin-household pets in closing regards, "Barbaris" is read here as a plant-derived pet nickname (most likely a dog) rather than an unidentified person; no prior corpus attestation of this name has been found, so a new, distinct entity is used.
