Grandfather Ilarion

also: дед Иларион, дух деда Илариона

The Kotlovich siblings' late grandfather, whose spirit their brother Kotlovich claims to channel daily in seances; the spirit's supposed pronouncements -- most notably that Ariadne is destined to marry Prince Maktuev -- run through the story as a recurring, half-comic, half-poignant thread of unfounded hope, invoked in earnest by both Kotlovich and Maktuev.
