Antisemitic folk-carol couplet (На пути, sections 88-91)

carol couplet

A four-line verse -- "Гей, ты, хлопчик маненький, / Бери ножик тоненький, / Убьем, убьем жида, / Прискорбного сына..." -- overheard indistinctly from the crowd of carolers' otherwise unintelligible roar at the inn (sections 87-92); presented by Chekhov as observed genre detail rather than authorial commentary or endorsement, with Likharev's approving reaction to the singing left unremarked by the narrator. A documented, if disturbing, feature of some 19th-century Ukrainian/Russian folk-carol repertoire; translated faithfully without softening per Hermitsh Press editorial practice. See the headnote and the glossary entry at loc 88 for fuller sensitivity context.
