A period eponym (after Karl von Basedow) for what is now usually called Graves' disease or exophthalmic goiter, an autoimmune thyroid disorder; Chekhov, himself a physician, uses the diagnosis matter-of-factly of his patient Olga Schwarz.

Базедова болезнь, the period eponym (after the German physician Karl von Basedow) for what is today usually called Graves' disease or exophthalmic goiter -- an autoimmune overactivity of the thyroid gland. Chekhov, himself a practicing physician, records the diagnosis of his patient Olga Schwarz in ordinary clinical shorthand, without further explanation, as would be natural between two doctors.
