Khozhdenie v narod (Going to the People)
going to the people
also: хождение в народ
The mass movement of the 1870s in which educated young Russians, mostly of gentry background, took menial or laboring work among the peasantry and factory workers to live among and "know" the common people, and often to agitate among them; Likharev's stint as a factory greaser and Volga barge-hauler places this phase of his life within the movement.

- On the Road §56 I went to the people, worked in factories, as a greaser, as a barge-hauler
"Khozhdenie v narod" ("going to the people"), the mass movement of the 1870s in which educated young Russians, mostly of gentry background, took menial or laboring work among the peasantry and factory workers in an effort to live among and "know" the common people (and often to agitate among them); Likharev's stint as a greaser and barge-hauler places this phase of his life squarely within that historical movement.
