Ariadne

In Greek myth, the Cretan princess, daughter of King Minos, who gave Theseus the thread that let him escape the Labyrinth after slaying the Minotaur, then was abandoned by him on Naxos before being found (in most versions) by the god Dionysus. Invoked here only as the source and resonance of the story's title and its heroine's name ("it suited her so well!", section 14) -- Chekhov's Ariadne is, like her mythological namesake, a beautiful woman whose devotion guides a man through crisis and who is ultimately left stranded by the men she helps, though the story inverts the myth's sympathies: it is Shamokhin, not Ariadne, who narrates himself as the abandoned party.
