The young poet in Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin" who is killed by the title character in a duel provoked by a trivial slight; his aria before the duel (best known from Tchaikovsky's 1879 opera setting) is heard offstage on the piano at the opening of Act Three of "The Wood Demon," underscoring the play's own undercurrent of jealousy and near-violence.
