Nikolai Stepanovich's 22-year-old daughter, a conservatory student in "A Dreary Story." Once a cherished child whose father invented a private language of ice-cream flavors for her fingers, she has become, in his account, a stranger whose inner life eludes him; she becomes engaged to, and secretly marries, the mercenary suitor Gnekker over the course of the story.
