The protagonist and center of consciousness of "Neighbors": a stout, unmarried landowner not yet thirty, already settling into the habits of an old-bachelor squire, who rides to confront his sister's married lover Vlasich and instead spends the story failing, again and again, to say or do what he actually feels -- a failure he recognizes explicitly in himself only in the story's closing pages.
