Vasya (Vasily Maksimych)

Matvei Savvich's neighbor and Mashenka's husband, conscripted into the army soon after their wedding; on returning to find his wife had taken up with Matvei Savvich, he forgives the affair but then, provoked, beats Mashenka savagely with his fists, feet, and reins; he dies shortly afterward of what is found to be arsenic poisoning.
