Pyotr Mikhailych's forty-one-year-old neighbor, a gaunt, stooped, financially ruined landowner and district "red" (liberal) with whom Zina has gone to live; a garrulous, self-dramatizing idealist whose freethinking has curdled into stale, mechanically repeated stock phrases, and whose first marriage -- entered in a fit of chivalrous enthusiasm for a wronged regimental scandal-girl -- he narrates at length in section 65 as the origin of his present debt and misery.
