Russian Literary Society

the Society

also: Русское литературное общество, Общество, the Society

A Petersburg literary society chaired at this date by Pyotr Nikolaevich Isakov; it was organizing a fundraising literary evening in Petersburg for the week after Easter 1889, to which Chekhov was invited but declined to travel, citing patients he could not leave. Referred to in the letter itself only as "the Society," with the fundraising-evening detail supplied by the source editors' commentary rather than by Chekhov's own text.
