Abogin

also: Абогин, Abogin

A stout, elegantly dressed, self-regarding landowner who arrives at Doctor Kirilov's house minutes after the doctor's son has died, begging him to come treat his own wife, supposedly stricken with a fatal aneurysm; the emergency proves to be a fiction -- his wife has used his absence to elope with Papchinsky -- and Abogin's operatic grief and self-pity collide bitterly with Kirilov's real bereavement.
