The Prozorov sisters' brother, once expected to become a Moscow professor; he marries the provincial Natasha, gradually cedes the household to her, mortgages the family house without his sisters' consent to cover gambling debts, and settles for a minor seat on the zemstvo board under the chairmanship of Protopopov, his wife's apparent lover. His long Act Four monologues on the town's stagnation voice the play's despair over wasted potential.
