Antip Sedelnikov

Antip

also: Антип Седельников, староста

The young headman (starosta) of Zhukovo in Chekhov's novella "Peasants" (Мужики, 1897): strict, self-important, fond of official-sounding phrases he does not fully understand, he directs the bucket brigade at the village fire, later confiscates the Chikildeevs' samovar for tax arrears despite being poor and behind on his own taxes, and once jails Osip's wife overnight for swearing at the village assembly. Distinct from the unrelated "Sedelnikov" in Chekhov's "Zabyl!!".
