Moscow University zoologist and a powerful figure in Russian scientific and academic life, described by Chekhov as having his hand on "everything and everyone, starting with zoology and ending with the Russian press" -- including, per Chekhov, effective control of the Moscow newspapers, which is why Timiryazev's attack on him appeared as a pamphlet rather than in print. Not to be confused with the Oskolki illustrator or the unrelated, unidentified Bogdanov of.

Anatoly Petrovich Bogdanov, the Moscow University zoologist Chekhov describes as having effectively cornered scientific and journalistic authority in Moscow -- "everything and everyone, starting with zoology and ending with the Russian press." The claim of press control is Chekhov's own characterization (offered as established fact to Suvorin, a rival publisher, rather than as something he expects to need to prove) and explains, in his account, why Timiryazev's attack had to appear as an independently printed pamphlet rather than in a newspaper column.
