An unnamed Circassian man, a lodger of the dead woman whose funeral Chekhov attended on Sakhalin, present out of idle curiosity rather than grief; after the burial he asks Chekhov's party what is to be done with the deceased's two orphaned children, since he is not obliged to feed them. Not otherwise identified from the surviving text.
