Pavel Grigoryevich von Derviz
Derviz
also: Дервиз, фон Дервиз, von Derviz
Railway concessionaire and magnate (von Derviz), for whose concession Fyodor Schechtel carried out architectural work; named here only as a third party to whom Chekhov sends joking regards via Schechtel, along with a mock request to borrow half a million rubles.
Reading notes
- To F. O. Shekhtel, 10 February 1888. Moscow. §5 Give my regards to Derviz, and remind him that I would not mind borrowing half a million from him
Referent-tracking note for translators: the borrowing request is addressed to Derviz, a third party (the railway magnate Pavel von Derviz, for whose concession Schechtel did architectural work), not to Schechtel himself. Schechtel is only asked to relay the greeting and the joke -- he is not the one being asked for money, and the half-million-ruble figure is a comic exaggeration matched to Derviz's real wealth, not a serious request.
