the doctor-narrator of "A Story Without an End"

The unnamed first-person narrator, a doctor and occasional writer, summoned at two in the morning to a stranger's lodgings where he treats Vasilyev's self-inflicted gunshot wound and stays with him till dawn; a year later he is writing up the night as a story and cannot find an ending for it, a difficulty that becomes the story's own subject and title.
