  Ivan Ivanovich Gorbunov-Posadov, editor and moving force of Posrednik ("The Intermediary"), the publishing house Tolstoy had helped found to put cheap, morally improving booklets into the hands of the Russian peasantry. This short note thanks him for a parcel of Posrednik pamphlets and asks that two further items be forwarded.

  Ivan Ivanovich Gorbunov-Posadov, editor and moving force of Posrednik ("The Intermediary"), the Tolstoy-founded publishing house for cheap, morally improving booklets aimed at the Russian peasantry. This brief note answers his evident request to reprint Chekhov's story "The Attack" in a Posrednik edition.

• To V. G. Chertkov, 2 May 1891. Moscow. §5 I have received from Mr. Gorbunov, whom I esteem, two letters

  Ivan Ivanovich Gorbunov-Posadov, editor and moving force of Posrednik, who had written twice proposing that Chekhov let the house reissue "Vanka." This is the first extant reply in what becomes an ongoing Posrednik correspondence with Chertkov and Gorbunov-Posadov (cf., four months later).

  A closing postscript passing thanks to Gorbunov-Posadov, whom the letter -- addressed formally to Chertkov throughout -- never addresses directly, even though it was Gorbunov-Posadov's two letters that prompted the reply.
