Grandmother

Granny

also: бабка, старуха, Гранна

Osip's wife and Nikolai and Kiryak's mother in Chekhov's novella "Peasants" (Мужики, 1897), called "Grandma"/"Granny" by the whole family; toothless, bent, and constantly grumbling, she works herself and everyone else half to death, beats Sasha and Motka for letting the geese into her cabbage patch, hoards food during fasts while pretending piety, and is once jailed overnight by the headman for swearing at a village assembly. She is never given a proper first name in the text.
