An off-stage suitor of Katya's in Chekhov's "The Anniversary" ("Юбилей"), described as a fine, modest young man of no means or settled position; when Katya, talked into it by her sister Tatyana, refuses him at a party, he shoots himself in the chest in melodramatic despair -- and survives, a doctor having been sent for in time -- an episode Tatyana narrates as a harrowing crisis while everyone else on stage is desperate for her to stop talking.
