The name Ananyev finds carved into the railing of the seaside gazebo, dated 16 May 1876 and marked "O. P." ("left in remembrance"), in "Lights" (1888) -- one of several graffiti signatures Ananyev reads as evidence of ordinary people's reflexive wish not to vanish without a trace.

One of several names Ananyev finds carved or penciled into the gazebo's railing -- ordinary visitors' small, anonymous bids not to be forgotten, which Ananyev reads (and briefly joins, adding his own name) as evidence of the same reflexive human wish for remembrance that his later philosophizing about "dust and oblivion" studiously denies any meaning to.
