The wandering seminarian hero of Gogol's story "Viy" (Вий), invoked by Vlasich in section 86 as a comparison for the unnamed, likewise wandering theological student who is tortured to death on the Koltovich estate in his told-and-retold local anecdote; a literary allusion rather than a character who appears in "Neighbors" itself.
