Nikolai Matveyevich Kozhin, addressee of Chekhov's brief formal letter of 17 January 1890; apparently wrote to Chekhov on 14 January inquiring about staging the farce "The Proposal" in Moscow, evidently on behalf of a Moscow theatrical concern. Otherwise unidentified in this corpus -- Chekhov addresses him with the formal "Dear Sir" (Милостивый государь) salutation used for strangers on business, not a personal acquaintance.

Nikolai Matveyevich Kozhin, addressee, otherwise unidentified beyond his inquiry (in a now-lost letter of 14 January) about staging \emph{The Proposal} in Moscow, apparently on behalf of a Moscow theatrical concern. The formal salutation "Milostivy gosudar'" ("Dear Sir"/"Gracious Sovereign," a period business formula for addressing a stranger) marks him as someone Chekhov did not know personally, unlike the familiar first-name openings used with friends and editors elsewhere in this corpus.
