- The Kiss §77 Lopukhova
The brigadier's teasing about Lobytko "pining for Lopukhova" -- a stout, unglamorous woman well past forty -- is a joke entirely at Lobytko's expense: it deflates his self-styled reputation as an irresistible ladies' man (the "setter" of loc 12) by pairing him, in front of the whole brigade, with a woman he would never have chosen, exposing the general's own crude taste for "large women" as the actual butt of the joke.
