Vyacheslav Avksentyevich Manassein

Manassein

also: Манассеин, проф. Манассеин, Professor Manassein

Vyacheslav Avksentyevich Manassein (1841-1901), a prominent Russian internist and professor of medicine, and editor of the medical weekly "Vrach" ("The Physician"); Chekhov reports him renting a dacha near the Lintvaryov estate at Luka and jokes that he will be intimidated by Manassein's learning at future medical consultations there -- "He is an editor, after all!" being an ironic nod to Manassein's authority in the profession Chekhov himself straddles as both doctor and writer.
