Shamrayev and Polina's daughter, who dresses in black "in mourning for my life" and is hopelessly in love with Treplyov, who does not return her feelings; she takes snuff and drinks, marries the schoolteacher Medvedenko out of resignation rather than affection, and by Act Four is worn down by domestic drudgery and an infant she is largely indifferent to, her unrequited devotion to Treplyov still unresolved beneath her flat, ironic manner.
