Merchutkina

also: Мерчуткина, Настасья Федоровна Мерчуткина

An elderly, immovably persistent petitioner in Chekhov's "The Anniversary" ("Юбилей"); arrives demanding money she believes the bank owes her late-employed husband, a claim that turns out to rest on nothing at all -- her husband, a provincial secretary, served in an entirely unrelated military-medical department that has nothing to do with the bank. She cannot be made to understand this, will not leave, and is finally paid off by Shipuchin just to be rid of her, after which she is chased bodily around the office by the enraged Khirin.
