The lecturer's wife

The unnamed, domineering proprietress of a music school and girls' boarding school who ordered her husband to deliver the lecture on tobacco; she keeps him penniless, calls him "scarecrow," "viper," and "Satan," and her looming presence in the wings drives the lecture's abrupt final swerve back to propriety.
