Nikanor

The narrator's coachman, who drives him to the station at the story's midpoint and, later, on the long, reckless sleigh ride to and from Ivan Ivanitch Bragin's estate. Visibly pleased at first that his master is leaving (Section 242), he turns out, on the return drive, to be thoroughly drunk, tearing the horses downhill at a terrifying speed and shouting wild, mocking asides about the narrator ('Let's give the general a ride! Run 'em to death, he'll buy new ones, my darlings!').
