Nikita Ivanovich Krylov (1807-1879), noted Russian jurist and professor of Roman law at Moscow University, remembered in "A Dreary Story" (Section 268) via an anecdote of bathing with Pirogov at Reval and cursing the cold water with "Scoundrelly Germans!" -- cited by the narrator as a precedent for his own ungracious muttering against Pyotr Ignatyevich's beloved German scholars. The anecdote of the jurist Nikita Krylov cursing the cold Baltic water at Reval (Tallinn) while bathing with the surgeon Pirogov -- offered by the narrator as a half-comic precedent excusing his own muttered, unfair "Your Germans are asses" at Pyotr Ignatyevich. The joke depends on the well-worn cliche, current among the educated Russian gentry, of blaming "the Germans" (used loosely for the Baltic-German and broader northern-European administrative and academic establishment) as a catch-all irritant.
