The eldest of the three Prozorov sisters, twenty-eight at the play's opening, a high-school teacher worn down by grading and headaches who dreams of Moscow along with her sisters. By Act Three she is promoted to headmistress against her own wishes, a post that seals her into the provincial life she longed to escape, and she closes the play with its final, unresolved plea to know what all the suffering is for.
