Olivier

A Frenchman who leased the Koltovich estate in the 1840s, remembered in local anecdote (told by Vlasich in section 86) as a man who despised and mocked the Russians around him and who had a wandering seminarian tortured to death at his dinner table over a suspected affair with his daughter, the body reportedly thrown into the estate's pond; he bought off the resulting inquiry and left for Alsace. Invoked again by Pyotr Mikhailych in section 116 as a grim point of comparison: unlike himself, Olivier at least "said and did what he thought."
