Prince Maktuev

also: князь Мактуев

A wealthy but unremarkable suitor whom Ariadne refused before the events of the story proper; he remains devotedly, silently in love with her throughout, visiting the Kotlovich estate to sit near her piano and consulting his friend Kotlovich's channeled spirit of grandfather Ilarion, which repeatedly "predicts" that Ariadne will become his wife. He reappears at the story's close, newly arrived in Yalta, offering Shamokhin the possibility of release.
