The never-onstage chairman of the zemstvo board under whom Andrei serves as a minor member; he sends gifts and a troika to the Prozorov house from Act One onward, and by the play's end the household's unspoken understanding is that he and Natasha are having an affair, with Andrei alone failing or refusing to see it.
