A retired lieutenant who manages Sorin's estate, husband of Polina Andreyevna and father of Masha; a blustering, theater-obsessed name-dropper of past actors and performances, prone to petty exercises of authority (most notably refusing Arkadina the use of the carriage horses in Act Three) that provoke one of the play's sharper conflicts between the household's practical and social hierarchies.
