Moscow University botanist and plant physiologist (1843-1920), a leading popularizer of Darwinism in Russia. Chekhov sends Suvorin a pamphlet by Timiryazev attacking "charlatan botany" -- an oblique public swipe at the zoologist Anatoly Bogdanov -- and offers a companion note of his own, ghostwritten with Nikolai Wagner, making the same charge against zoology.

Kliment Arkadyevich Timiryazev, the Moscow University botanist and prominent popularizer of Darwinism in Russia. The pamphlet Chekhov is forwarding attacks what he calls "charlatan botany" -- an oblique public swipe at Anatoly Bogdanov (see the note at this section), whose paper is understood to fall equally under the charge, since Timiryazev could not place the piece in any Moscow newspaper. Chekhov and Wagner's companion note (sections 5-10) proposes to make the parallel charge against zoology, Bogdanov's own field.
