Vasily Sergeyich

A once-wealthy gentleman exiled to Siberia some fifteen years before the story's action over a falsified will, reduced to "settler" status; his wife joined him, grew bored, and ran off with a lover, and his grown daughter, the one remaining object of his devotion, is now dying of consumption while he drives frantically from doctor to doctor.
