- To I. S. Vologdin, 13 November 1891. Moscow. §1 И. С. ВОЛОГДИНУ
This item is a TELEGRAM, not a letter -- corrected from an earlier draft that treated its clipped grammar as ordinary epistolary terseness. Per the standard edition's editorial commentary, it directly answers a telegram Vologdin sent Chekhov on 11 November 1891 asking which steamer a Sakhalin schoolbook shipment had gone out on, since an invoice for it had arrived but the payment had not. Vologdin was head of the chancery office of the commandant of Sakhalin Island (правитель канцелярии начальника острова Сахалин) -- Chekhov's institutional contact for the shipments, not merely a personal acquaintance from the 1890 journey.
- To I. S. Vologdin, 8 March 1891. Moscow. §1 И. С. ВОЛОГДИНУ — 8 марта 1891 г. Москва.
This item is a TELEGRAM, not a letter -- a single line of business, closed with only the bare surname and no salutation or formal close. It is the earlier of two surviving telegraphic exchanges with Vologdin in this corpus (compare, 13 November 1891, the later wire that closes out the following season's shipment). Per the standard edition's editorial commentary, it directly answers a telegram Vologdin sent Chekhov on 6 March 1891 asking what sum had been spent on Suvorin's schoolbooks for the Sakhalin schools, so that Vologdin would know the total cost and whether the cash-on-delivery charge had been lifted before remitting payment. Vologdin was head of the chancery office of the commandant of Sakhalin Island (правитель канцелярии начальника острова Сахалин), Chekhov's institutional contact for the schoolbook shipments organized after the 1890 journey.
