Yegorov
also: Сапожных дел мастер Егоров, Master Bootmaker Yegorov
A master bootmaker who, in a drunken existential outburst, demands of the conductor to know where he is and what century he lives in -- his own answer to 'who are you?' deflates his own grandiose question with flat, comic bathos.
Reading notes
- In the Railway Carriage §25 Yegorov, master bootmaker
The one vignette that inverts the pattern: instead of a grandiose claim punctured by a mundane trade, a drunk's melodramatic existential question ('what century am I living in?!') is answered by his own flatly mundane trade, self-deflating without any interlocutor's help.
