An Adriatic resort town on the Kvarner Gulf (in Austria-Hungary at the time of the story; present-day Opatija, Croatia), where Ariadne summons Shamokhin to join her and Lubkov; Shamokhin's disillusioned description of its shabby single street, its hotel-choked shoreline, and its parade of interchangeable resort tourists is one of the story's set pieces of disenchanted travel writing.
