The artificial sea-level waterway across the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt, linking the Mediterranean and Red Seas; a stop -- via Port Said -- on Chekhov's sea voyage home from Sakhalin, later recalled among the "exotic" photographs he offers as illustrations for Tikhonov's magazine "Sever".
