The public library of Chekhov's home town of Taganrog, to which he donated copies of his own books and, via this letter, a Tolstoy-signed copy of \emph{The Power of Darkness}; the first of a series of author-inscribed books Chekhov collected and sent to the library over subsequent years.

The public library of Taganrog, Chekhov's home town. This letter marks the start of a sustained personal project: over the following years Chekhov repeatedly sent the library copies of his own books and, as here, inscribed volumes by other writers he was able to obtain, eventually giving it a substantial collection and, later in his life, funding its building and cataloguing directly.
