A monumental arch in Moscow (near present-day Triumfalnaya Square/Tverskaya Zastava), commemorating the Russian victory over Napoleon; Chekhov invokes it here only as a landmark he associates with a grocer's shop bearing the sign "Shastunov," the pseudonym he is vetoing for Shavrova's story.
