"The Graphic" was a London illustrated weekly newspaper, founded 1869, known for high-quality wood-engraved illustrations; its English title is kept untranslated in Chekhov's own source text, which glosses it with a bracketed Russian aside "Иллюстрации" ("Illustrations"), rendered here as the bracketed English gloss "Illustrations (Eng.)" to preserve the original's own translator's-note structure. Chekhov, acting as intermediary, forwards a clipping of it that Suvorin's news agency sent -- apparently a mix-up, since Sumbatov had actually asked Suvorin for books or articles on "Macbeth" via the preceding letter.
