Papasha

Headnote

"Papasha" ("Daddy") appeared in 1880, among the earliest scenes Chekhov published as Antosha Chekhonte while still a medical student supporting his family on space-rates from the comic weeklies. It belongs to a run of very short, single-situation sketches from these years – captions, parodies, two-page comedies built on one absurd premise – written fast, for pay, and sharpened for maximum effect in minimum words.

The premise here is a household farce reduced to type: a nameless Mamasha and Papasha, defined only by their functions and their bodies (she thin as a herring, he round as a beetle), quarreling over their son’s failing marks while a maid darts in and out from behind the curtain. The scene plays as a duet of stock gestures – the wife’s theatrical despair, the husband’s blustering capitulation – before Papasha sets off to fix the boy’s grade not through argument but through a mixture of flattery, tribute, and a bribe pressed into the arithmetic teacher’s hand. The teacher’s repeated "I cannot, sir" gives the piece its comic engine: a small, worn phrase repeated past the point of conviction.

Two things are already visible here that the mature Chekhov will keep and refine. First, the domestic scene is staged through props and gestures rather than commentary – the curtain, the maid, the fat lips, the gold watch, the twenty-five-ruble note – and the reader is left to supply the judgment the narrator withholds. Second, the story ends exactly where it began, with the maid back on Papasha’s knee: nothing has actually changed, the boy’s fate settled by petty corruption rather than by anyone’s love or principle, and the narrator declines to say so outright. The piece is a sketch, not yet the tender-ironic double vision of the later stories, but the machinery – restraint, the telling detail, an ending that refuses to resolve – is already turning.

Mamasha, thin as a Dutch herring, came into the study of Papasha, fat and round as a beetle, and gave a little cough. At her entrance the maid fluttered off Papasha’s knee and darted behind the curtain; Mamasha paid this not the slightest attention, for she had long grown used to Papasha’s little weaknesses, and looked upon them from the standpoint of a sensible wife who understands her civilized husband.
"Pampushka," she said, sitting down on Papasha’s knee, "I’ve come to you, my dear, for advice. Wipe your lips – I want to kiss you."
Papasha blinked and wiped his lips with his sleeve.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Here’s what, Papochka... What are we to do about our son?"
"What about him?"
"You don’t know? Good God! How careless you fathers all are! It’s dreadful! Pampushka, do at least be a father, since you don’t want to – can’t – be a husband!"
"There you go again! I’ve heard it a thousand times already!"
Papasha made an impatient movement, and Mamasha very nearly fell off his knee.
"You’re all alike, you men, you don’t like to hear the truth."
"Have you come to tell me the truth, or to talk about our son?"
"Well, well, I won’t... Pampusha, our son has brought home bad marks from the gymnasium again."
"Well, what of it?"
"What do you mean, what of it? They won’t let him sit the examination! He won’t be moved up to the fourth form!"
"Let him not be moved up, then. It’s no great misfortune. So long as he studies and doesn’t get into mischief at home."
"But Papochka, he’s fifteen! Can it be right, at his age, to still be in the third form? Just think, that wretched arithmetic master has given him another two... Now, what does that look like?"
"It looks like he needs a flogging, that’s what it looks like."
Mamasha ran her little finger over Papasha’s fat lips, and it seemed to her that she had knit her brows coquettishly.
"No, Pampushka, don’t speak to me of punishments... Our son is not to blame... There’s some intrigue here... Our son – no use being modest about it – is so advanced that it’s simply not credible he shouldn’t know some foolish arithmetic. He knows everything perfectly, I’m quite sure of it!"
"He’s a charlatan, that’s what he is! If he played about a little less and studied a little more... Sit down on the chair, mother dear... I don’t think it can be comfortable for you to sit on my knees."
Mamasha fluttered off Papasha’s knee, and it seemed to her that she moved toward the armchair with the gait of a swan.
"Good God, what heartlessness!" she whispered, seating herself and closing her eyes. "No, you don’t love our son! Our son is so fine, so clever, so handsome... An intrigue, an intrigue! No, he must not be kept back a year, I won’t allow it!"
"You’ll allow it, if the good-for-nothing studies badly... Ah, you mothers!.. Well, go with God, and I have – something here – I must attend to..."
Papasha turned to the desk, bent over some paper, and glanced sidelong at the curtain, like a dog eyeing a plate.
"Papochka, I won’t go... I won’t go! I see I’m a burden to you, but bear with me... Papochka, you must go to the arithmetic teacher and order him to give our son a good mark... You must tell him our son knows his arithmetic well, that he is weak in health and so cannot please every last examiner. You must compel the teacher. Is it fitting for a young man to sit in the third form? Do try, Pampusha! Just think, Sofya Nikolaevna found that our son looks like Paris!"
"That’s very flattering to me, but I won’t go! I’ve no time to go traipsing about."
"No, you will go, Papochka!"
"I won’t go... My word is firm... Well, go with God, my soul... I have something here I need to attend to..."
"You will go!"
Mamasha rose and raised her voice.
"I won’t go!"
"You will go!!" cried Mamasha. "And if you don’t go, if you won’t take pity on your only son, then..."
Mamasha shrieked and, with the gesture of an enraged tragedian, pointed at the curtain... Papasha grew confused, lost his head, struck up some song for no reason at all, and threw off his coat... He always lost his head and turned into a perfect idiot whenever Mamasha pointed him toward his own curtain. He gave in. Their son was summoned and made to give his word. The boy grew angry, scowled, sulked, and said that he knew arithmetic better than the teacher himself, and that it was not his fault that in this world fives were handed out only to schoolgirls, the rich, and toadies. He burst into tears and supplied the arithmetic teacher’s address in every particular. Papasha shaved, ran a comb over his bald patch, dressed himself more decently, and set off "to take pity on his only son."
As most papashas do, he walked in on the arithmetic teacher unannounced. What things one doesn’t see and hear, walking in unannounced! He heard the teacher say to his wife: "You cost me dear, Ariadna!... Your whims know no bounds!" And he saw the teacher’s wife throw herself on her husband’s neck and say: "Forgive me! I cost you little, but I value you dearly!" Papasha found that the teacher’s wife was very good-looking, and that were she fully dressed, she would not be nearly so charming.
"How do you do!" he said, coming up to the couple with an easy air and scraping his foot. The teacher was thrown off for a moment, and his wife flushed and darted into the next room with the speed of lightning.
"Excuse me," Papasha began with a little smile, "I may, perhaps, have – in some manner – disturbed you... I understand perfectly... In good health, I trust? Honored to introduce myself... Not entirely unknown, as you see... A fellow servant of the state, too... Ha-ha-ha! But don’t trouble yourself!"
Monsieur the teacher smiled a little, for propriety’s sake, and courteously motioned toward a chair. Papasha spun round on one foot and sat.
"I," he went on, displaying his gold watch to the teacher, "have come to have a word with you, sir... Mm-yes... You’ll excuse me, of course... I’m no master of learned speech. Our sort, you know, always speaks plainly... Ha- ha-ha! Did you study at the university?"
"Yes, at the university."
"Just sooo!... W-well, yes... And it’s warm today, sir... You, Ivan Fyodorych, have gone and given my little son some twos there... Mm... yes... But that’s nothing, you know... To each his due... Unto him tribute – tribute; unto him his lesson – his lesson! Heh-heh-heh!... But, you know, it’s unpleasant. Can it really be that my son understands arithmetic so poorly?"
"How shall I put it? Not that he understands it poorly, exactly, but, you know, he doesn’t apply himself. Yes, he knows it poorly."
"Why does he know it so poorly?"
The teacher opened his eyes wide.
"Why? Because he knows it poorly and doesn’t apply himself."
"Good heavens, Ivan Fyodorych! My son applies himself splendidly! I work with him myself... He sits up nights... He knows everything perfectly... Well, and if he’s a bit of a scamp... well, that’s youth for you. Which of us was never young? I haven’t disturbed you?"
"Good heavens, not at all... I’m even very grateful to you... You fathers are such rare guests with us pedagogues... Though, indeed, it shows how much you trust us; and trust is the main thing in all this."
"Naturally... The main thing is not to interfere... So then, my son won’t be moved up to the fourth form?"
"No. And it isn’t only in arithmetic that he has a two for the year, is it?"
"We can go round to the others as well. But now, about the arithmetic?... Hhhe!... Will you set it right?"
"I cannot, sir! (The teacher smiled.) I cannot!... I wished for your son to be moved up, I tried with all my strength, but your son doesn’t apply himself, he’s impertinent... I’ve had unpleasantness with him more than once."
"He’s y-young... What’s to be done?! Well, do change it to a three!"
"I cannot!"
"Come now, nonsense!... What are you telling me? As if I didn’t know what can be done and what can’t. It can be done, Ivan Fyodorych!"
"I cannot! What will the other boys with twos say? It’s unjust, turn it however you like. On my honor, I cannot!"
Papasha winked one eye.
"You can, Ivan Fyodorych! Ivan Fyodorych! Let’s not draw this out! It’s not the sort of matter to spin idle talk over for three hours... Tell me, in your own learned way, what you yourself consider just. We all know what your justice amounts to. Heh-heh-heh! Speak plainly, Ivan Fyodorych, without these evasions! You gave him the two on purpose, after all... Where’s the justice in that?"
The teacher opened his eyes wide and – that was all; and why he did not take offense will remain, for me, forever a mystery of the teacherly heart.
"On purpose," Papasha went on. "You were expecting a guest, sir. Ha-heh-a- heh!... Well, what of it? If you please, sir!... I agree... Unto him tribute – tribute... I understand the service, as you see... Progress all you like, but... still, you know... mm-yes... the old ways are best, the most useful. What I have, I’m glad to share."
Papasha, with a snort, drew his wallet from his pocket, and a twenty-five- ruble note stretched out toward the teacher’s fist.
"If you please, sir!"
The teacher went red, shrank into himself, and – that was all. Why he did not point Papasha to the door will remain for me forever a mystery of the teacherly heart...
"You," Papasha went on, "needn’t be embarrassed... I understand, after all... Whoever says he doesn’t take – takes... Who doesn’t take these days? It can’t be helped, my dear fellow, not to take... You’re just not used to it yet, is that it? If you please, sir!"
"No, for God’s sake..."
"Not enough? Well, I can’t give more... You won’t take it?"
"Good heavens!..."
"As you wish... Well, but do set the two right!... I’m not asking as his mother would... She’s crying, you know... Palpitations and all the rest of it..."
"I sympathize entirely with your wife, but I cannot."
"If our son isn’t moved up to the fourth form, then... what will become of him?... Mm-yes... No, you must move him up!"
"I’d be glad to, but I cannot... Will you have a cigarette?"
"Merci beaucoup... It wouldn’t hurt to move him up, though... And what rank do you hold?"
"Titular... Though by my post, the eighth class. Hm!..."
"Just sooo... Well, you and I will come to an understanding. One stroke of the pen, eh? Agreed? Heh-heh!..."
"I cannot, sir, kill me if you like, I cannot!"
Papasha fell silent a moment, thought it over, and pressed the teacher again. The pressing went on a very long while yet. The teacher had to repeat his unvarying "I cannot, sir" some twenty times. At last Papasha wearied the teacher and grew still more insufferable. He began trying to kiss him, asked to be examined himself in arithmetic, told several off-color anecdotes, and grew altogether too familiar. The teacher was made sick by it.
"Vanya, it’s time for you to go!" cried the teacher’s wife from the other room. Papasha understood what that meant, and blocked the doorway with his broad little figure. The teacher, worn out, began to whimper. At last it seemed to him that he had hit upon the most brilliant idea.
"Here’s what," he said to Papasha. "I’ll set your son’s yearly mark right only when my other colleagues also give him a three apiece in their own subjects."
"Word of honor?"
"Yes, I’ll set it right, if they set theirs right."
"Done! Your hand on it! You’re not a man, you’re a marvel! I’ll tell them you’ve already put it right. The bride goes to the groom! A bottle of champagne’s on me. Well, and when can I catch them at home?"
"Even now, if you like."
"Well, and we’ll be acquainted, of course? You’ll drop in on me sometime for an hour, informally?"
"With pleasure. Good health to you!"
"Au revoir! Heh-heh-heh-hm!... Ah, young man, young man!... Farewell!... Your gentlemen colleagues, of course, will have my regards from you? I’ll pass it along. To your good wife, from me, a most respectful résumé... Do call again!"
Papasha scraped his foot, put on his hat, and vanished.
"A fine fellow," thought Monsieur the teacher, watching Papasha go. "A fine fellow! What’s on his heart is on his tongue. Simple and good-natured, it seems... I like people like that."
That same evening, Mamasha again sat on Papasha’s knee (though the maid had sat there before her). Papasha assured her that "our son" would be moved up, and that learned men are brought round not so much by money as by pleasant manners and a gentle pressure on the throat.
