Headnote
Written from Moscow on November 23, 1885, this letter again goes to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, editor-publisher of the Petersburg humor weekly Oskolki ("Splinters") and Chekhov’s principal editor at the time. After a quick errand – Levitan’s new address, and a request that Leikin bring back issues of Oskolki and his promised new book – the letter turns to its real business: a spirited self-defense over the story "The Player" (Taper), which Leikin had apparently read as a swipe at Oskolki for running it in a rival humor magazine, "Budilnik" (Bud). Chekhov lays out, with some heat, the economics behind his double-dealing among the comic weeklies – he owed Budilnik from the summer, his fee there hovers around 45 to 65 rubles a month regardless of volume, and he can’t afford to give it up – while promising Leikin exclusivity through the end of the year.
The letter then loosens into the miscellany typical of Chekhov’s working correspondence: a note on a possible holiday-issue piece, Petersburg gossip about payment through the journalist Sergei Khudekov, rain threatening the sledging season, a glimpse of medical practice (morphine prescribed for his ailing brother Nikolai, an editor treated for hemorrhoids), and a closing aphorism – that all of human life is made of trifles – before signing off to go eat. It captures Chekhov at twenty-five: professionally shrewd about magazine economics, still practicing medicine on the side, and moving easily between business, family worry, and jokes within a single page.

5 Tomorrow I vanish from Moscow for 2–3 days. I don’t know whether I’ll manage to produce anything this time for "
Oskolki" or not, but I’m sending a letter anyway, given the urgency of the questions and events it touches on. Primo In the first place (Lat.).: Levitan is living at the "
Gatchina." His full address is as follows: "
Sretenka,
Kolokolny Lane,
furnished rooms ’Gatchina,’ in Malyushin’s house, No. 28.
Adolf Ilyich Levitan." By the way, Moscow agrees with Levitan. He’s not a bad hand at drawing... Secondo In the second place (Lat.).: if you’re not afraid of extra baggage, and are in fact asking for extra baggage, then bring me the back issues of "Oskolki" from last year, ’84. I ask this for the sake of binding and posterity. Also don’t forget that you promised me your new little book.
6 Now about the unfortunate "Player." Had I known that my
"Player" would serve as sufficient grounds for accusing me of malice, I certainly would not have written it – would not have written it even despite the fact that I strongly disagree with you in your view about the 400 fled contributors and so forth. Had I known that "Oskolki" holds to such and such rules, I would not have gone into someone else’s monastery with my own rulebook, and either would not have given
"Bud" the story at all, or would have asked to have it printed under a different signature... But the trouble is that until now I did not know those journalistic-diplomatic subtleties which you enumerate... The devil take it, how was I to know that "Bud" is printing me now only because it’s subscription time? He asked me for a story, as he always does, and I gave one, suspecting nothing and not wishing to suspect anything, all the more since I gave them stories in the summer too – in summer, when subscriptions aren’t even dreamed of... "Bud" prints me rarely, it’s true, because I’m dear to him, but I don’t think his latest issues are trying now to seem any dearer than they were in July. I could say the same of
"Razvlechenie"...
7 I gave "The Player" in October... I couldn’t refuse to give something, because I’ve owed "Bud" since summer. I owe him trifles, but still it has to be paid... But be that as it may, I promise not to give anything in December, January, and at the end of November to the humor magazines under the signature A. Chekhonte, or indeed under any signature known to the readers of "Oskolki."
8 I could, I suppose, simply stop working for "Bud" altogether, but I don’t think you’d want that. An extra 30–40, and sometimes even 50, a month, God knows, comes in handy for a proletarian like me. You’re surprised that I didn’t send "The Player" to "Oskolki," where it would have been placed whenever I liked, and for which I could have taken an advance. My heartfelt thanks, but these are palliatives... An advance has to be worked off, and one full issue (for me) is like the one swallow that doesn’t make a spring. However much I write and however often I send you my prose, my fee won’t stop wavering between 45 and 65 a month... Were I to send you a whole sackful of articles right now, my fee wouldn’t grow any fatter for it, since its limit isn’t set by you but by the magazine’s own framework... However, we’ll see each other soon and settle all this by word of mouth...
9 Thank you for the discovery that you have "A Dream" on hand. If it’s something decent and worthy of a holiday issue, send it to me. I’ll subject it to some reworking and send it back at once...
10 Thanks for the talk with
Khudekov. Though I’m still waiting, I know all the same that the hour of payment is coming...
11 It’s raining. I’m afraid it will ruin the sledging. I saw Nikolai on Wednesday. Saw him lying in bed and prescribed him morphine.
12 Today I had the honor of treating an editor for hemorrhoids.
13 Much curious news. When you come I’ll tell you, but for now be well, forget all the players in the world, and don’t be angry. Is it really worth it, over trifles... Though I won’t finish that sentence, since I recall that the whole of human life is made up of trifles.
