Headnote

1 A brief, breezy note from Chekhov, written in Moscow around 10 January 1886, to Mikhail Mikhailovich Dyukovsky, a childhood friend from Taganrog whom Chekhov addresses by the joking nickname "Bank." Chekhov is due to serve as best man ("шафер") at a wedding on the 12th and scrambles to borrow formal dress – a tailcoat and matching waistcoat – while also asking to touch his friend for a 25-ruble loan, promised back with a mock-solemn oath.

2 The letter is a small, characteristic specimen of Chekhov’s private comic voice: rapid-fire requests, self-mocking exaggeration (the vow to repay 30,000 rubles interest-free "when I become Zakharyin," i.e. when he becomes as famous and wealthy as the celebrated Moscow physician Grigory Zakharyin), and an easy, joshing intimacy with an old friend far removed from the literary persona of his published work.

My dearest Bank!
Милейший Банк!
Once again I have a request for you. One of these days my requests will earn me a punch in the neck from you...
К Вам опять просьба. Дождусь я своими просьбами того, что Вы дадите мне по шее...
On the 12th I’m best man. Do you know of anyone who has a tailcoat and tailcoat waistcoat handy? Where might such things be got? Your tailcoat won’t do... Might Skvortsov’s fit my height?
12-го я шафером. Нет ли у Вас у кого-нибудь на примете фрака и фрачной жилетки? Где таковые можно достать? Ваш фрак не годится... Не подойдет ли Скворцова под мой рост?
On the 12th I’m playing best man until 5 in the evening. After five we’ll meet at the "Hermitage."
12-го я шаферствую до 5 вечера. После пяти увидимся в "Эрмитаже".
Third: does your bank happen to have 25 rubles going at interest? Word of honor, I’ll pay it back. May I sink through the earth if I don’t pay it back. When I become Zakharyin (which will never happen), I’ll lend you 30,000 rubles interest-free.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
