Headnote

Written on 22 January 1884 in Moscow to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, the publisher of the humor magazine Oskolki ("Splinters") and Chekhov’s principal editor in these years, this letter answers a reproach from Leikin for a long silence. Chekhov explains himself with the loose, digressive candor typical of his correspondence with Leikin: an account of a trip taken to escape his name-day, business about a fee owed to his brother Alexander, thanks for a shipment of books and a roll of felt-plush, and a report on a submitted story ("Marya Ivanovna") that had been rejected.

The middle of the letter turns into genuine, pointed magazine criticism – Chekhov’s assessment of Oskolki’s house feuilletonists as dry and formulaic, and of its fiction as caught between two stools – an early sign of the critical eye and editorial instincts he would bring to bear on his own generation of writers. The letter closes with a account of an evening with the poet Liodor Palmin and Chekhov’s characteristically self-deprecating, half-serious ambivalence about standing for election to the Pushkin Circle in Moscow, before he signs off, exhausted, at three in the morning with medical examinations still ahead of him.

Dear
I received your angry letter and am answering it herewith. I did not write to you earlier for perfectly legitimate reasons: I was away from Moscow for an indefinite time. I left home on the 14th of January, having sent you off a little package, which you, if you remember, received earlier than usual. It was only on the 19th that I got back to Moscow. I traveled for a selfish purpose: I fled my name-day, which usually costs me more than any journey. The whole time I was traveling I ate, slept, and drank bad cognac with a crowd of officers. Judge for yourself, then, whether it is fair to be angry with me for taking so long to answer your letter. Up to today (from the 19th to the 22nd) I have not written to you, because I was waiting for an occasion – that is, for the sending off of the usual transport.
It seemed to me that I had already written to you about my brother Alexander’s fee. If I have not written yet, then here is the simplest solution to the question, in my opinion: send the money in my brother’s name (Al. P. Chekhov, Taganrog, Customs House). I remember writing more than once about this money... but to whom? I probably wrote to my brother, not to you. My memory is good for nothing.
I received the complete sets of "Oskolki" for two years and offer you my enormous thanks. I sent them off to the binder today. I have already received "Khristova nevesta" back from the binder. I am sorry I have nowhere to place a little review of it. Pastukhov is offended at you, "Novosti dnya" does not print reviews, and I have no wish to deal with the little couriers... The plush received. A thousand times my brother has charged me with thanking you. The plush lies there awaiting its fate... Nikolai is a terrible loafer!
This time I am sending you a little trifle. It is not my fault that I am not sending something bigger and more serious... The fact is that today, even before receiving your letter, I was thinking: "I have one long story lying at ’Oskolki.’ There is no need to hurry with it, then. I shall write something for somewhere else..." And then suddenly your letter with the "return"! Had I known earlier that "Marya Ivanovna" would not do, I might perhaps have written something more fit for use. Still, the year is young yet and I shall manage to produce something. There is time...
I am reading "Oskolki" diligently... It is a good magazine, better than all the other humor magazines, at least... But does it not seem to you that "Oskolki" is somewhat dry? What dries it out, in my opinion, is the great multitude of feuilletons: I. Grek, Ruver, Chernigovets, Provintsialny... And all these feuilletons chew over the same thing, chew it in the official mold on official themes... I. Grek’s little pieces are charming little pieces, but they gradually and imperceptibly slide down into that same feuilleton. Chernigovets’s verse feuilleton is such impassable dryness that, truly, it is hard to read to the end. Fiction is allotted with you not the second place, but not the first either, some middling spot between the two... And the fiction too leans toward dry fare. Instead of a light genre, instead of a sketch, a caricature, one sees the ponderous great tale of Barantsevich (Chugunchikov – frightening even to say!). The story may be good, but it is written too: one glory belongs to the moon, another to the stars... What suits the pages of "Zhivopisnoe obozrenie" is sometimes unbecoming to a humor magazine. Porfiryev is dry to the nec plus ultra to the utmost degree (Latin).. A little more elegance would help! Where there is elegance, there is style. Much could be scratched out on this theme, but one cannot scratch out everything, cannot say it all to the end... And besides, your head would spin from all the advisers. For you, the master of the magazine, who has thought and thought over again about the magazine more than any of us, our advice, set beside your own thoughts and plans, must seem idle chatter... An adviser, in advising, usually fails to notice the obstacles...
L. I. Palmin visited me once (a month ago). We drank, naturally. After the drinking he grew tender and suddenly arrived at the conclusion that I absolutely must stand for election to the Pushkin Circle. In the end he promised to write to you about my candidacy and the next day sent me the circle’s charter. I do not know whether he wrote to you about this? I would count it, like any plain mortal, a great honor to be a member of a literary circle. I am ambitious. But I do not live in Petersburg, I live in Moscow, where, until there is a branch of the circle, one would have to pay a ten-ruble note for the mere honorary title of member – that is not expensive, but it is pointless. To be, in Moscow, a member of the Pushkin Circle is of no use either to oneself or to one’s neighbors... That is firstly. Secondly, I am afraid, sinner that I am, that I might be blackballed. I have been working only a short time (five years), am unknown, and so one could not reproach the black balls for a lack of logic... On the basis of this unpersuasive reasoning, if Palmin has written to you, I ask you to wait for now. Do not write to Liodor Ivanovich. I agreed with him fully, as was proper, and now it is awkward to go against it. But if, contrary to expectation, the question should arise with you of opening a branch of the circle in Moscow, then support our poor Moscow. Then I shall most earnestly ask you to put me up for election as a member and shall agree not only to the ten-ruble but even to the thirty-ruble subscription. It would not be a bad thing to promote this branch among our Moscow brethren. The brethren themselves will not lift a finger if the above-mentioned question arises. They drink vodka, doff their caps before Pastukhov, and want to know nothing else. So there is a long answer to your short letter. I am terribly sleepy. Three o’clock in the morning. Tomorrow I must get up early and go to the clinics. The examinations are not yet over. I have gotten through only half of them. I was not in Petersburg for the holidays for want of money.
Respectfully yours, A. Chekhov.
